As some of you know, I do a lot of staring at trees (in a non-weird way). The more I observe them, the more variety I find in their colors.
--
From early childhood, we tend to simplify a tree's summer color as "green". But reality is much more complex and appealing.
--
First of all, there are dozens of greens: warm greens, cold greens, light greens, dark greens, grey-greens and saturated greens.
--
Second, some trees like the Crimson King Maple have dozens of additional colors in their foliage such as: deep warm reds, yellow-ochres, dark purples, light browns and more!
--
All of this to say that, once you do enough deep staring 🌳👀 at trees, you can see all that variety and incorporate it in your art.
--
Even if you don't paint, you can still notice all that beauty and feel jovial about it! 😉

Some snapshots from life as an artist during the J Some snapshots from life as an artist during the January 2021 lockdown in Quebec. (Don't worry, I'm okay on that last one. 😉)
--
In the first days of 2021, I was looking forward to lockdown. Most artists would. We're used to be by ourselves, surrounded by art supplies, with the company of our imaginations. Our social lives might be given the back seat in our wagon of priorities. They're taken for granted.
--
My first three weeks of lockdown were productive. After all, I had no other options than to stay in my studio and create. Yet, something started to feel wrong on week four. I was taking my vitamins, yet I was growing deficient in mental well-being.
--
A two-hour walk with a great friend flipped my mood right side up. My mind relaxed as we strolled on snowy hills. I realized I had taken human interactions for granted. I forgot how cheerful, inspiring and, frankly, essential they are.
--
As artists, we can always justify a stay in our hermit kingdoms. We might even feel guilty for stepping out. But we should. We're creating for humanity, so, we should be unapologetically engaged in it.
--
I want to thank the people who kept in touch. I have more efforts to do on that side. So, I guess we'll talk soon! 😊

A couple of years after finishing my academic studies, I realized I didn't want to keep making paintings that "look like photos". Don't get me wrong, there is enormous skill involved in an accurate representation of nature. Yet, I've always wanted to take my works beyond what could be observed.
--
The challenge was bigger than I had anticipated. It meant losing most of the approval from my realism-oriented colleagues and teachers. It meant I couldn't see an A-to-B path in my work anymore. Every time, I had to dive into uncertainty. My paintings never felt "finished" but rather "abandoned". In short, the chosen path was far from comfortable.
--
2020 was the first year I started feeling like I'm getting somewhere. I'm still on the path. I don't know where it leads. But I'm curious to find out.
--
Thank you all for being a part of it.
